This short collection of poems encapsulates the push and pull the author feels as he stands at the center of being the son of two women and the father of two sons. Both searching and defiant, these poems are rooted very much in the current politics surrounding gay rights. Reading this collection now I find myself hoping for a more tolerant future, while simultaneously imagining future generations looking back at this time in dismay. I give this collection full marks for the subject matter and the heart with which it is delivered. I wish I could say that the language appealed to me as much - it was a bit too distant and plain for my personal tastes. I prefer a few more surprises in imagery and more concrete sensory details. Still, this is a solid collection worth a read.
