In the Palm of Your Hand

In the Palm of Your Hand: The Poet's Portable Workshop - Steve Kowit, Dorianne Laux

This book was assigned reading for me once upon a time in an early college poetry class, so naturally I read very little of it. What I remembered most about it was the assignments at the end of each chapter. Some time back I found myself itching for poetry assignments, since I've been out of school for so long, so I dug this book out. Now that it is no longer required, I found myself enjoying the process of reading through the chapters and working on the assignments. This really is a handy little volume for a new poet, and a nice refresher for an experienced one. It has a lot of interesting poems, ideas, and assignments throughout. And I am happy to say that I have now finally written that villanelle that was due some 10 years ago. I don't think I'll be handing that one in, but I am glad I finally wrote it. If you're looking for a good all-around poetry workshop book this is a good one to choose.
