The Last Unicorn

The Last Unicorn - Peter S. Beagle

This was my absolute favorite movie when I was a wee one, and I know several people who love this book. That said, reading this book was a different experience than I expected. The movie is taken straight from the book, line by line, which made reading the book extremely surreal. I could hear the lines being delivered by voice actors, and picture the animation as I read. There is very little deviation between the two works. It's very strange to feel nostalgic while reading a book for the very first time.

All of this aside, there is a lot in this book to take interest in. In some ways it's very meta, and I enjoyed the exploration of fairy tales. I still find the Red Bull fascinating, and there are a lot of interesting ways to read what he may represent. The same can be said of all the characters, as they are quite archetypal. I'm looking forward to discussing this book with the book club in a few weeks.
