This book is difficult to describe. Teen lit zombie book doesn't really capture the feel that this book creates. The setting is creepy beyond measure, and the story is fairly slow paced, oppressive, and upsetting. I was actually on the fence about this one until the last 50 pages, which was when I knew that yes, the author was actually going to go for the more complex story than the easy one. The end did not disappoint. I know that probably all sounds cryptic, but I don't want to say more and potentially spoil or taint someone's reading. I wish this book had been marketed toward adults, because that's a better fit in my mind. I'm not sure this book would appeal much to a younger audience.
