Gun, With Occasional Music - Jonathan Lethem

I don't know what to make of this book. A quote on the cover compared it to Philip K. Dick and Raymond Chandler all mashed together, and that is pretty much exactly it. It is a tough guy noir detective story, right down to the inflated metaphor, but it's all done very knowingly. And then there is the weirdness factor of the sci-fi setting. Evolved animals, prolific drug use, and a karma system that can end you in the deep freeze, No really, that's not slang this time - they will freeze you. I found myself chuckling a good amount of the time, but I also often felt like I saw spinning my wheels as much as the main character as he groped blindly through the mystery. If you want to read an odd exercise in genre blending give this one a shot.
